Gendered Internet: Men and the Emancipatory Occupation of the Virtual Vanity Table on YouTube,
Media Theory, P 2012

This paper examines male makeup tutorials on YouTube as sites of gender negotiation and participatory identity construction. Through visual analysis, it compares contemporary tutorials from 2012 with the beauty manual Schön Sein – Schön bleiben published in 1960, exploring how a traditionally feminine space is reoccupied and reinterpreted. The study situates these practices within media theory and gender studies as spaces of cultural exchange rather than fixed role reversal.
